Do you love libraries like I do?

I suspect that, like me, many (all?) of you are avid library lovers. I rely on my local libraries to stretch my book budget (because who can afford all the books they want to read?!).

But even if I had unlimited funds, I’d still want to support the mission of public libraries. I love that they make books accessible to everyone–and I love that they provide a bookish place for people of all ages to hang out and absorb all the readerly vibes. (I especially love that my own local library is literally right around the corner–and that it offers ebook versions, too, since that’s my favorite format.)

That is why I am thrilled to share that the Betty Snickerdoodle Mysteries are now officially available to libraries!

I have started adding my ebooks to public library digital catalog networks (like OverDrive and Libby). The first couple are available now, and the next will follow in the coming weeks.

There is just one little catch: just because the books are available in the system doesn’t mean your local library automatically owns them yet. To get the Napa Valley adventures of Bea, Angela, and the gang onto your local digital shelves, you need to request that your librarian add the books. That’s where I could use your help.

Sometimes readers tell me, “I wish my library had your books, but I don’t want to bother the librarians by asking.”

I can see why you might worry about that. In fact, I once said this very thing to my own mom, who volunteers at her local library in Florida. She set me straight: it’s really not a bother!

In fact, requests actually help local librarian get the most out of their own budgets.

Libraries work a little differently than I expected. Here’s what I didn’t know:

• Librarians are thankful that they no longer have to decide far in advance to buy all the books they hope readers will like. Nowadays, the keep a portion of the budget set aside to buy the exact books their patrons ask for. (It’s library strategy formally called “Patron-Driven Acquisition.”)
• Librarians want proof that the books they buy actually get checked out. By requesting a library book you want to read, you’re providing that proof. You’re helping your library spend its budget wisely!
• Your request is also a gift to other cozy fans: When you request the first book of our series, the library purchases a license for it. Once you’re done reading, it’s available to other cozy mystery lovers to enjoy.

If you’d love to read the The Betty Snickerdoodle Mysteries through your library, here’s what you can do:

If you use the Libby app (or OverDrive) to read ebooks:

• Open the app, make sure you are logged into your library card, and search for Betty Snickerdoodle Mysteries or Pepper Frost.
• Since I just recently added them, your library might show them as “Not Found” or “Available to Recommend.”
• A little button will pop up that says “Notify Me” or “Recommend.”
• Tap that button! This automatically alerts the library’s system that you’re interested in reading the book.

If you prefer to read in print, my books are available to libraries in that format, too. Here’s what to do:

• Visit your local library’s website and look for a tab called “Suggest a Purchase” or “Request a Book.”
• Or, simply walk up to the front desk next time you’re there and ask how to make a suggestion or request.
